Mysterious Valley: After their ordeal in Belhaven, Maggie and Helen go to California for
some much needed R & R. In an effort to take her mind off her losses and
to fulfill a lifelong fascination with flying, Maggie decides to take flying
lessons. During her first dual cross-country flight, her instructor pulls a
simulated engine-out emergency on her over the rugged mountains north of Lake
Berryessa, California. But, to her instructor’s surprise, Maggie finds a
small landing strip and sets their plane up for an emergency landing. Her
instructor is fascinated, and decides to let her continue the flight down to
almost a touchdown. However, just a hundred feet off the ground on final
approach a blinding green beam of light penetrates the windscreen causing her
instructor to abort the landing and climb out. Unable to let it alone, Maggie
finds outthat the beam of light was most likely a powerful laser, and she
becomes obsessed with finding out why such a laser would be operating at a
